Overview
For a long time I have been really interested in brewing my own beer. Thanks to my very wonderful wife, I have all the equipment to make my own batches in the great comfort of my home. My reason for creating this area of my site is to accomplish a couple of tasks:
- Keep a log of my brews with methods used and mistakes made
- Attempt to make better beer
- Experiment with WordPress to explore its power
My first attempt
As I write this page, I am waiting out the last remaining days of my beer sitting in bottles to be carbonated by the sugars I added. I have about 13 days left to find out if my batch was successful. I don’t have much hope because this is my first one. However, I am curious and I have also learned from my first experience and have now derived a base line for comparison to future batches.
What did you make?
Great question! I decided to go for a English Pale Ale. My reasons for an ale are that in my house it stays between 65 to 75 degrees which seems ideal for keeping an ale fermenting.
Stuff to remember for next time?
Yes I made some mistakes so here is a list of stuff to remind myself what to do next time:
- Don’t get rid of your sterilization water. It is the last thing you get rid of. Maybe put it in a spray bottle?
- StirringĀ of the wort is okay. Make sure to sterilize your hands.
- Scape the sides of the boiling pot as the water evaporates.
- Use a white ladle to inspect the color of the wort.
- When transferring wort to primary fermentor, pour the mixture 4 – 5 times between boiling pot and fermentorĀ to get oxygen into the mixture.
- When putting the yeast in wort, stir it around to add oxygen.
